Mr. Robertson believes marijuana should be legal for recreational use and available in manner similar to the way distilled alcohol is sold. He has stuck by his position for years now, and came out in support of the legalization measures which recently passed in Washington State and Colorado. His reasoning is that the war on drugs hasn't worked, and the disproportionately harsh sentences for marijuana use are having a worse effect than the drug itself.
Robertson has broken from the pack of evangelical Christian political forces, like Focus on the Family, who have steadfastly stood by the failing war on drugs. He believes that if other evangelicals understood the situation as he did, they would agree with him.
He's famous for saying genuinely outrageous things, like when he said tornado victims from the Midwest would have been spared their fate if they had prayed more. But his views on marijuana legalization are reasonable and his logic is sound. Perhaps the tornado comment was an inarticulate moment from a decent, religious man. Mr. Robertson is a beloved daily household guest in millions of socially conservative households across the world and his message is very important to them.
He was clear that he has not used marijuana and doesn't plan to; his opinion was based on what sounds like common sense. As he stated on The 700 Club,“I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded."
So we probably won't see him at Hempfest this year, but his significant influence on the millions of 700 Club viewers could be a vital force in the struggle for marijuana legalization.
